Review
Spellagories, by Playfirst, is a word game with a similar gameplay to word scramble, and a captivating storyline. The game takes you on an adventure to a magic Kingdom with a mission: lift an evil spell, fight wicked mages and save a kingdom from their threats.
Evil mages are casting spells throughout the Kingdom, transforming villagers into horrible beasts and animals. What you have to do is lift the spell that transformed villagers and beat the evil mages that threaten the kingdom, making your way through three castles. The gameplay basically consists in forming words from a set of letters given, with the goal of guessing a key word. If you manage to uncover the mysterious word, one villager is cured, and you get closer to the main objective.
The game has three game modes, Story, Untimed, and Arcade. Story mode, the most exciting of all, challenges you to lift the spell and cure a villager before the day is over. Untimed mode is the most relaxing way of playing as you can take your time to save the villagers. In Arcade mode, in turn, you have to cure as many villagers as you can in a given time. In between levels, you are going to find bonus stages that will help you increase the score and give you more chances to succeed. While forming words, you can undo unlimited times, mix letters, or receive help from the raven.
Graphics have been well done, and are pleasantly accompanied by suspense music, creating a tense, fitting atmosphere.
A fully functional version of the game can be tried out for 60 minutes. |
